Tips for Surfing at Sunset Beach
Introduction
The purpose of the Tips section is to assist fellow surfers in extracting as much pleasure and joy as possible from their surf sessions at Sunset. By no means is it intended to be the definitive analysis of surfing at Sunset. It is just the distilling of one surfer's opinions and observations. If you feel I have made errors, if you disagree with one or more of my conclusions, or if you have something further to add to the discussion, please feel free to email me with your comments.
I might also add that this section is not designed to be a comprehensive how-to resource for those just starting to learn to surf. That is a whole other subject outside of my scope here. I am merely focusing on aspects of surfing specific to Sunset. If you are a beginner, I can recommend this short online tutorial as well as these two books: Learn to Surf and Surfer's Start-Up: A Beginner's Guide to Surfing.
One final point. I personally consider Sunset to be a magical and miraculous creation of nature, worthy of praise and adulation. It is mysterious, ever-changing, and capable of delivering first-class waves. However, I am fully aware of the fact that many (probably most) surfers deride this spot, not even considering it to be a "real break." For these folks, I certainly am not attempting to convince you of Sunset's merits. I freely admit there are many better places to surf and I welcome all to enjoy those other places and leave Sunset to the dolphins and the uninitiated!
